The equipment that Bosco Fernández Tapias bought before making his dive in October 2010 is "similar" to the one recovered by the Special Group of Underwater Activities (GEAS) of the Civil Guard this Thursday, 90 meters deep in Playa Chica, in Puerto del Carmen. Although it will be necessary to carry out a forensic study to determine with certainty the identity of the deceased, everything indicates that it is Bosco Fernández Tapias, son of the businessman and former vice president of Real Madrid, Fernando Fernández Tapias.

Precisely, he was the only diver who had disappeared in recent years in this area and had not yet been found. At the time of his disappearance, in October 2010, the Civil Guard located the last movements that Bosco Fernández had made with his credit card and discovered that he had bought diving equipment in Canasub, in Arrecife. For this reason, he contacted the instructor of this diving center, José Domínguez, who was required to provide the invoices for the equipment acquired by Bosco Fernández.

"Anyone who knows a little about how Bosco disappeared, imagines that in 99 percent of the possibilities it is his body that they have found. However, we must wait for the DNA tests," Domínguez tells La Voz, given the state of decomposition of the corpse.

This instructor was on Thursday in Playa Chica, following the rescue work of the body, as he was required by the Civil Guard. "They asked us again for the detail of all the purchases and they told us to be present in the first dive to identify or ratify that this material could be that of Bosco. It is similar material, yes," this diver admits cautiously.

Although the body was located on Tuesday, it was not until Thursday when it could be recovered. Thus, it was necessary to wait for the arrival of a team of specialized divers from the Civil Guard of Madrid, because in Las Palmas they do not have a team suitable for practicing "trimix", a deep-sea diving technique.

Domínguez explains that the area where the lifeless body of this diver was located is "dangerous". It is known as Cueva de Las Gambas, and it is about 50 meters deep, that is, it exceeds the limit of recreational divers, who go down to 40 meters maximum. "You can suffer from the pathology of narcosis or also known as diver's drunkenness. If it affects you, you lose consciousness and if you go alone, there is nothing you can do. You faint and stay there," he says.

"The body has not moved from there"

Domínguez points out that Bosco Fernández Tapias was a recreational diver, that is, his limit was 40 meters. "Diving in this cave implies exceeding that limit and he was aware of that, because this was one of his favorite areas. I communicated this to the Civil Guard so that they would search there," he indicates.

However, the Civil Guard determined that the body of Bosco Fernández Tapias was in a sinkhole about 200 or 300 meters deep and, after a week of searching, ended the search due to the impossibility of rescuing the body. "It is true that the currents and the bottom take you towards the sinkhole when you are diving. But I think that the body they have recovered has been on a terrace for a long time, 90 meters deep. If not, his body should have moved from the cave upwards and that is impossible, because he was carrying bottles, vest, ballast and everything. That is what has been found," says Domínguez.

The body, as advanced by the instructor who located it, is in an advanced state of decomposition. "In a very short time, a body subjected to that pressure, almost disappears. Nitrogen dissolves in the tissues and, when these remains rise to the surface, they explode," he says. Hence, a forensic analysis is necessary to identify the corpse.

"Bosco dived in a peculiar way, not to call it dangerous"

José Domínguez recalls that he met Bosco Fernández Tapias several weeks before his disappearance. "We knew his facet as a diver and we sold him some material," he explains. Bosco Fernández wanted to take diving courses with Canasub. "We called him for four days. At first the phone rang and then it didn't anymore," he says. It was then that the Civil Guard contacted this diving center, requiring the invoices for the material acquired by Bosco Fernández.

Domínguez points out that the story of Bosco Fernández "was strange". "He practiced scuba diving in a diving center in Puerto del Carmen. But there came a time when they told him that they didn't want to dive with him anymore, because he dived in a peculiar way, not to call it dangerous. He was very absent-minded and didn't pay attention to his partner," says this instructor.

When he ran out of diving center, Bosco Fernández asked about these courses in Canasub. "He would come into the center and ask you about something. Then, he would come back half an hour later and ask you the same question. That led us to think that he was not entirely well and that is why we never went into the water with him," says José Domínguez. This instructor believes that, precisely the refusal of several diving schools, led Bosco to make the decision to practice scuba diving alone.
