The Civil Guard has been carrying out inspections of the sewage spill in Argana Alta since the 5th, given the possible administrative or criminal responsibilities that Canal Gestión, as the service manager, could have incurred.
As confirmed to La Voz, the Seprona made an initial visit after receiving a citizen complaint, and since then it has been “inspecting” the evolution of the spill.
The agents forward all this information to the Environmental Protection Agency, which depends on the Government of the Canary Islands, in case sanctions should be imposed. Regarding its possible amount, it varies depending on the severity and the damage caused.
In addition, the facts are also brought to the attention of the Prosecutor's Office or the Courts, so that they can determine if the company could have incurred in a criminal offense and proceed to open proceedings.
For his part, the Councilor for Cleaning and Public Works of the Arrecife City Council, Roberto Herbón, has also confirmed the intervention of the Civil Guard, and has stated that what happened “will lead to a sanction” to Canal Gestión.
Regarding the breakdown that caused this leak, which has lasted several days, Herbón affirms that it has already been repaired, according to what the company has told him. However, the puddle of sewage continued this Thursday in the area, and therefore also the stench that the neighbors have been enduring this week. “I don't understand why the company hasn't taken that water out of there, they have tanker trucks to do it”, the councilor questioned.
