Suárez Gil faces charges of mistreating his wife, illegal detention, and illegal possession of weapons.

The Family Attention Service Group of the Provincial Brigade of the Judicial Police of the Superior Headquarters of Police of the Canary Islands, has confirmed the processing of proceedings and subsequent making available to the court - which will happen this Thursday - of the former regional deputy and well-known businessman, José Miguel Suárez, 66 years of age, as the alleged perpetrator of a crime of mistreatment in the family environment, illegal detention and illegal possession of weapons, after being arrested at his home in Tafira, in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, after a call warned that he had pointed a short weapon and assaulted his wife, the lawyer, Josefina Navarrete.

The Police confirms that Suárez Gil, with no police record, was arrested at his home by officials of the National Police Corps and placed at the disposal of the Family Attention Service Group, after being commissioned by the 091 Operations Room, where communication was received from 112 reporting that the detainee had his wife held in his home, threatening her with a firearm.

It also confirms that when the agents appeared at his home, the woman who made the call corroborated that the couple was inside the home and that the husband had a firearm and was threatening his wife, with whom he had started divorce proceedings.

The agents entered the home with bulletproof vests and upon reaching the living room they could see that Suárez Gil was in that place carrying a firearm in his right hand pointing towards the ground and very close to him, about half a meter away, was his wife, Josefina Navarrete, who showed considerable fear due to the situation at the time.

The agents asked Suárez Gil to drop his attitude and hand over the weapon and, after taking advantage of a moment of carelessness, they managed to reduce and disarm him while his wife managed to leave the property.

Subsequently, the acting officials verified 'in situ' that the weapon was a 'Smith & Wesson' brand pistol, assembled, without safety, and with a cartridge in the chamber and the magazine loaded with eight cartridges. Likewise, they seized a large quantity of ammunition of different calibers, as well as six short weapons, four hunting shotguns and another eleven rifles of various calibers.
