The Animalist Party (PACMA) has filed a complaint with the Government of the Canary Islands asking for an investigation into alleged animal abuse in the Grand Final of the XXXIII Cattle Dragging Contest of the Island of Gran Canaria, which was held on July 11 at the Cabildo's experimental farm. "This activity consists of forcing cows, bulls and oxen to participate in time trials, pulling loads of up to 1,500 kilograms, dragging them by means of ropes, timbers and crossbars supported on the necks," explains the formation.
The Animalist Party attended the event to document the alleged animal abuse suffered by the animals. "According to the images obtained, many bovines had rings or chains ringed in the nasal septum, from which the 'athletes' pulled forcefully to force them to advance, deforming the snout and causing them obvious pain," he denounces, stressing that this practice "contravenes the Technical Regulations of the Canarian Dragging Federation and the Law of Physical Activity and Sports of the Canary Islands".
For all these reasons, PACMA has filed a complaint with the Ministry of Public Administrations, Justice and Security, the Ministry of Education, Universities, Culture and Sports, the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries and the Government of the Canary Islands, demanding that an investigation be initiated and the pertinent responsibilities be determined. It also requests that sanctions be imposed and the license be withdrawn "from the persons who exercised such irregularities, in addition to being disqualified from the profession, trade or business related to animals and from the possession thereof".
The animal rights formation has been defending for years the abolition of this practice that it describes as "atrocious and evident animal abuse" and assures that, until it achieves its objective, it will "denounce through legal channels each irregularity committed".
