New Canaries of Lanzarote warns of the increase in robberies on boats docked in Puerto Naos

Nueva Canarias Lanzarote has denounced the increase in robberies inside several boats docked in Puerto Naos in Arrecife. According to the political formation, last month two boats suffered these robberies in which it is estimated that the value of the stolen objects reached about 15,000 euros. Among the stolen items are various fishing tools and basic items for those affected to carry out their professional activity. From the political formation they have pointed out that some of the complainants have indicated that "unfortunately this is not the first time it has happened"

But there is also another worrying circumstance, as they have indicated through a statement. "The fishermen do not understand how it is possible that with the closure of the Puerto Naos wall, which caused so much controversy at the time, arguing security reasons by the Port Authority, it is not the solution to these events", they have stated in a statement from the political formation.

Germán Martín, one of the affected shipowners, explained on Radio Lanzarote-Onda Cero that in the last robbery he suffered on his property, objects worth about 8,000 euros were stolen. These include fishing rods, sonar, a radar that cost him about 4,000 euros, a current generator and other electrical appliances. To this, according to Martín, we must add the additional damage involved in not being able to fish "for a week and a bit until you replace the equipment".

Studying judicial measures

But for Martín, the most worrying thing is that the Port Authority, whose engineer in Arrecife he has contacted, does not assume any type of responsibility. "They tell me that they do not have civil liability insurance. We have sent a letter to the Port Authority in Las Palmas and they have not yet responded," said Germán Martín, who has indicated that he is studying with his lawyer "the possibility of initiating legal measures against the Port Authority".

"Someone will have to take responsibility, because we do have the obligation to pay the port monthly," lamented Martín. This shipowner has indicated that he has already filed three complaints against the Port Authority. But he has also criticized, like other fishermen and Nueva Canarias, that not all the port's security cameras are operational. "They turn them on and off. And the recordings are only kept for 24 hours, although the National Police forced them to keep them for three days," said this man who has said he feels "tired" of this situation

"You go home from the port calmly and they call you at seven in the morning saying what happened, your soul comes up. There are many families who are left without work," he reflected while asking for measures to be taken.

From Nueva Canarias they have pointed out that some of these robberies that are taking place in Puerto Naos could be "the responsibility of a band specialized in stealing electronic devices from boats to later sell them" on the black market.
