Half an hour after the hit-and-run that took place last Saturday in Arrecife, a woman of about 29 years old went to the Local Police station to confess to being the perpetrator. This has been confirmed to La Voz by this police force, which has opened proceedings for an alleged crime of failure to provide assistance.
Apparently, the young woman claims that she got scared and that is why she left the scene, leaving the woman she had run over and the dog she was walking on the road, which was the one that took the worst part. In fact, according to what her owner told La Voz, that same day it had to be sacrificed, due to the serious injuries it presented.
“I was in Madrid and whenever I am traveling they take care of him,” he explains, still shocked by what happened. First he received a call informing him of the accident and shortly after, he had to make the difficult decision by phone to authorize the animal to be sacrificed. “He had internal bleeding,” he says, unable to contain his tears, explaining that the veterinarian warned him that he was not going to make it. “They asked me what do we do and I said: Well, let him not suffer.”
As for the woman, her injuries were minor, although she had to be treated at the Valterra health center and three days after the event she is still “sore”. In her case, the blow was with the vehicle's rearview mirror, which caused her to fall to the ground.
"Even if she reacted half an hour later, there is a crime there"
“What kind of person leaves not only my dog, but also a lady lying on the road?”, asks this man, who has decided to also file a complaint and appear in the judicial case that is opened.
According to what he explains, the Local Police has informed him that since she voluntarily appeared half an hour after the accident, the woman will not be charged with a crime of fleeing, but with one of failure to provide assistance.
For his part, he will also demand responsibilities for the death of his dog, a dachshund. “Bruno was with me for 11 years. He was like my shadow,” he says. “Even if she reacted half an hour later, there is a crime there”, he emphasizes.
The accident occurred at about 8:00 p.m. last Friday on Manolo Millares Street, at the height of the last traffic light on this road, which does not work. According to what the former Arrecife councilor Daniel Cabecera has made public, who witnessed the event, he was driving along that road and saw a woman crossing with a dog through the pedestrian crossing, so he reduced the speed. “Suddenly a small white car passed me on the right lane and accelerated, running over the lady and her little dog. He didn't even pretend to brake, he kept accelerating leaving behind a middle-aged lady, an old dog and a rearview mirror lying on the ground”, Cabecera denounced.
