The facilities of the Lanzarote Sports City hosted the XV International Karate Spanish Cup on Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning. An event in which the best national and international karatekas met, and where the performance of the Canary Island athletes shone brightly. Manuel Cedrés in kata and Ana Maite Diepa in kumite, won bronze medals for the Canary Islands Karate Federation. A competition organized by the Royal Spanish Karate Federation together with the Canary Islands Karate Federation and which has had the collaboration of the Department of Tourism of the Arrecife City Council led by Rafael Juan González.
The competition began on Saturday afternoon, with the first qualifying rounds of the kata and kumite modalities being held. The XV International Karate Spanish Cup was attended by 65 karatekas, with the fifteen autonomous federations of Spain being represented and athletes from Andorra, Azerbaijan, the United States, Slovakia, Iran, Mozambique and Portugal traveling. On Sunday morning, the qualifying rounds were held in which the competition medals were at stake.
Damián Quintero and Sandra Sánchez, gold medalists at the Baku European Games, lived up to expectations and took the gold medal in the kata modality, being the third consecutive title won by Damián Quintero. The silver medals went to José Manuel Carbonell (Valencia) and Sonia García (Madrid), and the bronzes were won by Manuel Cedrés (Canary Islands), Francisco José Salazar (Madrid), Margarita Morata (Andalucia) and Katarina Longava (Slovakia).
In the kumite modality, the gold medals were won by Rodrigo Ibáñez (La Rioja) and Cristina Ferrer (Balearic Islands), after defeating Luis García (Castilla y León) and Cristina Vizcano (Madrid) in the finals, respectively. In the fight for the bronze, Jagoba Vizuete (Spanish Federation), Manuel Rasero (Extremadura), Lourdes Posadas (Castilla y León) and Ana Maite Diepa (Canary Islands) were the winners.
The XV Spanish Karate Cup concluded on Sunday at noon with the awarding of trophies to the winning karatekas in the kata and kumite modalities. An event that was headed by Antonio Moreno, president of the Royal Spanish Karate Federation, and José Pérez, president of the Canary Islands Karate Federation. They were accompanied by the mayor of Arrecife, José Montelongo, the Councilor for Tourism of the Arrecife City Council, Rafael Juan González, and the Minister of Sports of the Cabildo de Lanzarote, Patricia Pérez.
