An Air Europa flight, covering the Lanzarote-Bilbao route, was forced to make an emergency landing at the Madrid-Barajas airport, as confirmed to La Voz by the Aena press office in the Canary Islands. The incident occurred on Thursday afternoon. Apparently, the pilots realized that there was a fault in the plane and, therefore, decided to land in Barajas and not continue with this flight to Bilbao.
According to the website of the newspaper El Correo, the failure in the aircraft occurred in the "flaps", which are located on the wings of the plane. These devices are only used in takeoff, approach or landing maneuvers, although they are sometimes also used when you want to achieve lower speeds.
The newspaper "El Correo" includes on its website statements from several passengers, one of whom said that "the plane was starting to descend when, suddenly, it took off again." After this, the pilot communicated with the travelers, informing them that he was going to go to Barajas to make an emergency landing.
When the plane finally landed in Madrid, an emergency operation had already been set up, with the presence of firefighters and the Civil Guard on the runway.
The flight arrived in Bilbao six hours later than planned, as passengers had to be relocated to another plane, which transferred travelers from Barajas to Bilbao. Thus, it should have landed at Loiu airport at 3:00 p.m., but it did so at 9:30 p.m.
