The Timbayba Musical Cultural Group of Tinajo celebrated its XXIV Folk Festival last Saturday, an event already consolidated in Lanzarote's cultural calendar. In this edition, the host group shared the stage with the Es Broll Dance Group, who came from Ibiza, in a night that reaffirmed the strength of folklore as a link between peoples and the living identity of the islands.
At 9:00 p.m. in the large social hall of Tinajo with full capacity, the Folk Festival was launched. This edition was presented by Suso de León, a member of Timbayba, who very excitedly greeted the public and thanked his family, Timbayba, for having him to present the festival.
The festival began with the performance of the Es Broll Dance Group, surprising the public with the cultural legacy shown with their dances and costumes that have been rescued and restored as cultural heritage of the island of Ibiza. Founded in 1982 by Ana Costa and Miguel Serra 'Es Broll', it was born with a clear purpose: to preserve and transmit the 'Ball Pagés', the traditional Ibizan dance that, generation after generation, has accompanied celebrations, meetings and moments of life on the island. The 'Ball Pagés' is an ancestral dance, recognized for its strength, symbolism and originality. The men with firm steps and stomping, invite the women, who respond with elegant and circular movements. All this accompanied by music played with traditional instruments such as the drum, flute, castanets, xeremia and espasí, made by hand, and with the shine of the empedrada, a characteristic jewel of the Ibizan woman.
The Colla Es Broll not only keeps this tradition alive in their land, but has also proudly taken it to international festivals in Egypt, Portugal, Lithuania, Poland and Menorca, receiving awards such as the award for the best traditional costume and distinctions for its artistic quality. Today they are ambassadors of Ibizan culture, showing the world that folklore is not only the past, but a living identity.
The Es Broll Dance Group, in its performance, offered the most representative of music and dances, the most authentic of the island of Ibiza, transmitting to the public the energy of their land and thus being able to celebrate together the strength of traditions. The 25 members that make up the Group left the stage very happy and grateful for the reception and applause received during their performance.
In the second part of the festival, the public was able to enjoy the work exhibited by the organizers and hosts. The members of the Timbayba Musical Cultural Group, directed in the musical part by Professor Clotildo Martín, offered the most representative of the folklore not only of Lanzarote but also added pieces from other islands, also winking at Latin America.
Timbayba in these 39 years has contributed to keeping our cultural heritage alive, women and men convinced that the folklore of Lanzarote must continue forward as a sign of our identity, a legacy that cannot and should not disappear. In order to carry out the organization, the Timbayba family has had to work hard, it has been a year of intense work with hardly any hours of rest in order not to fail their followers and to be able to go on stage one more year for the San Roque festivities.
They still preserve the musical chords and the applause of the public that supported them on the night of May 29 in the Plaza de Nuestra Señora de los Dolores when they presented their new clothing 'Fabrics of Identity', as a tribute to the peasants of Lanzarote of the 19th century. Clothing made by the artisan seamstresses, Rosa María Ruiz Ortega and Violeta Santos Morales and the advice of the professor, researcher and expert in Lanzarote clothing Ricardo Reguera. Clothing that they wore at this festival.
Among the songs and dances that Timbayba offered to the public, we mention some of them such as the mazurka of Gáldar, seguidillas of Gran Canaria, malagueña, isa, la carraqueña or the pasodoble Islas Canarias among others. At all times Timbayba felt the warmth of the public that reached the stage wrapped in applause.
