As part of the festivities in honor of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, the residents of Tiagua have kept alive a cherished tradition: the "Handball Game." This traditional sport of Lanzarote has endured thanks to the effort and dedication of the local community.
Last Saturday afternoon, the 46th Handball match was held between the teams of Soo and Tiagua. On this occasion, the young people of Tiagua not only participated but also learned the techniques of the game under the guidance of the 'bouncer' of Soo, Domingo García. The main objective of this event was to promote the interest of the new generations in this sport, which has fewer and fewer practitioners.
The young people, aged between 10 and 21, showed great enthusiasm during the match. José Cabrera, "Votador" of Tiagua, also actively participated in the game. The rivalry took a back seat, as the purpose of the call was to promote the Handball Game and ensure its continuity.
About the Handball Game
The Handball Game, which dates back to the 17th century, is played with teams of five players. The ball, made of rubber, wool, and goatskin, weighs 50 grams and has a diameter of 4 centimeters. The playing field measures approximately 60 steps long by 9 steps wide. A distinctive feature of the game is its scoring system, which follows the order of 15, 30, 40, and 50.
Since 1976, a group of people from Soo, Tiagua, Teguise, La Vegueta, and Arrecife has worked hard to rescue and preserve this cultural legacy. Thanks to their efforts, the Handball Game remains an integral part of local festivities and a symbol of Lanzarote's rich heritage.
