The César Manrique Foundation (FCM) presents this Friday, November 24, at 8:00 p.m., the book entitled 'Antonio Corujo. Centuries of sand and salt', written by Gregorio Cabrera. It is prologued by Saúl García and edited by the FCM's Publications Department within its 'Islands of Memory' collection. The event will take place in the José Saramago room (La Plazuela, Arrecife) and will also be broadcast live through the FCM's website and YouTube channel. Admission is free until full capacity is reached.
In the presentation, the author of the book and the prologuist will hold a conversation about it and about the figure of Antonio Corujo Tejera, its protagonist. It will be highlighted how he stood out from childhood for his ability and uniqueness when interpreting the oral and musical tradition of Lanzarote, with which he came into contact in the barbershop and canteen of his father, Domingo Corujo.
Heir to the musical talent of his grandfather Juan Corujo Martín, known as el Jariano, and the profound popular knowledge of his grandmother Margarita Brito, Antonio Corujo learned to sing and dance in the Jable during long evenings in front of the family home in San Bartolomé. The history of island folklore cannot be understood without the saga of the Corujo family, the basis of the traditional Agrupación Folclórica Ajei and the Christmas ranches of San Bartolomé.
In the eighties of the last century, Antonio Corujo carried out one of his great contributions to the knowledge of Lanzarote's popular culture with the dissemination among the educational community of the verses of Víctor Fernández, el Salinero, whom he heard for the first time in his childhood. His seal is present on several records and he has performed on stages in the Canary Islands, the Peninsula and abroad.
'Antonio Corujo. Centuries of sand and salt' is the seventh book in the 'Islands of Memory' collection, which has dedicated previous titles to Guillermo Topham, José Molina Orosa, Gabriel Fernández Martín, Miguel Pereyra de Armas, Luis Morales Padrón and Pepín Ramírez. A series of books aimed at rescuing the memory of characters or events of Lanzarote whose contribution from different areas of culture, science, society or politics has contributed to building the collective imagination of the contemporary history of the Island.
