Up to 14 local artists, including painters, sculptors, photographers, illustrators and designers, are part of 'Categorical Portrait', a new exhibition that can be seen from this Thursday, October 1, at the Agustín de La Hoz House of Culture.
Curated by art historian and critic Estefanía Camejo, this exhibition is organized by the Culture area of the Cabildo de Lanzarote, directed by Councilor Alberto Aguiar, and has the collaboration of the Department of Culture of the Arrecife City Council, which provides the space for the exhibition.
As its title indicates, the exhibition focuses on the genre of portraiture, understood as the reflection of a person, both in their physical and moral or psychological aspects. Categorical Portrait investigates the different reformulations of the portrait as a traditional aesthetic category, considering both the artistic-plastic values implicit in the works and the processes of meaning and thought that underlie this type of contemporary representations.

The 14 artists who are part of this exhibition are, in alphabetical order, Mariola Acosta, Elena Betancor, Francisco Castro, Chedey Delgado, Flora González, David GP, Víctor G. Moreno, Daniel Jordan, Moneiba Lemes, Fátima Lemes, Lana Neble, Raquel Plans, Fernando Robayna and Adriana Sandec.
The Minister of Culture of the Cabildo de Lanzarote, Alberto Aguiar, has expressed his satisfaction that the exhibition can now be seen by the public. "This is an exhibition with which we want to try to make visible the enormous artistic talent that Lanzarote currently treasures, with a large number of local artists of the highest level. In this specific case, there are 14 who participate, with the common link of using the portrait, the reflection of the human figure, as a common thread,” he explained.
Aguiar also highlighted that this activity is part of the line of collaboration that the Culture Area of the Cabildo de Lanzarote and the Department of Culture and Celebrations of the Arrecife City Council have established to develop in the field of Plastic and Visual Arts, following what was agreed at the Island Board of Culture Management, for the development of specific exhibition projects that, due to their special assembly and production characteristics, require inter-institutional cooperation for the revitalization of exhibition spaces.
