The Malpaís de La Corona Folklore Group from Haría took the stage again after a two-year break due to the pandemic to celebrate its XVIII festival, which this year is themed "Rites and Wishes of Saint John's Night."
The festival began with a performance by the Popular Music Group "Teguey" from San Bartolomé, musically directed by Leo García. For such a special night, they chose original compositions from their album "Este es mi Pueblo," connecting with the audience from the very first notes, who applauded and hummed along to songs like Risco de Famara, Verano en Guacimeta, La Vieja Molina, Sorondongo, among others.
Next, the members of "Cumbre Nueva" from the municipality of El Paso on the island of La Palma took the stage. The group was founded in 1976 with the main objective of preserving folklore in all its aspects: songs, dances, and costumes. It consists of about 50 members, including musicians and dancers. For this edition of the festival, they performed the most traditional and representative music from Isla Bonita, such as El Siote, Folías, La Caringa, etc.
For the "Cumbre Nueva" family, this was their first trip off the island after the eruption of the Cumbre Vieja volcano, and on this occasion, they were accompanied by the Security and Emergency Councilor of the Cabildo de La Palma, Nieves Rosa Arroyo, and the Culture Councilor of the Ayuntamiento del Paso, Teresa Hernández. The members of Malpaís de la Corona and Teguey, as well as the audience, showed their support for "Cumbre Nueva," supporting them at all times with affection and applause.
The closing of the festival was led by the hosts and organizers, Malpaís de La Corona, who, despite the nerves due to the responsibility of ensuring that everything went as planned, far exceeded expectations, surprising everyone present with their traditional songs and dances such as Seguidillas, Isa del Uno, Folías, and Malagueñas. They presented their choreographies marked by spectacular movements with strength and determination, and their songs highlighted their voices with a potential that only they know how to achieve. They are musically directed by Mingo Cedrés.
Throughout the night, videos were projected showing the "Rites and Wishes of Saint John's Night." The mayoress of the Ayuntamiento de Haría took the stage to congratulate the members of the Agrupación Malpaís de La Corona for the success of the festival, also extending her congratulations to the members of Teguey and Cumbre Nueva, and to the audience. Luz María Rodríguez, president of Malpaís de La Corona, very emotionally thanked everyone for the love and support received. The event ended with the traditional isa entitled San Juanito.
The public, eager to celebrate, packed the square to support the members of Malpaís and the two invited groups.
