S. L. H. M., one of the five defendants accused of introducing 23 bundles of hashish to the island in June 2014, has accepted a sentence of three years and ten months in prison and the payment of a fine of more than 3 million euros. Initially, the Public Prosecutor's Office had requested six and a half years in prison for him for "a drug trafficking crime that does not cause serious harm to health", but has decided to reduce the sentence after the defendant acknowledged the facts and accepted an agreement.
Like him, the other four defendants have also acknowledged the facts during the hearing held in Arrecife, before the Sixth Section of the Provincial Court, so it has not been necessary to continue with the trial. Thus, I.H.H., M. T. G. K., G. H. M., and O. M. R. have accepted a sentence of three years and one day in prison, as well as the payment of a fine also exceeding 3 million euros. For the four of them, the Prosecutor's Office initially requested five and a half years in prison.
The facts
The facts, as stated in the Prosecutor's Office's indictment and as acknowledged by the defendants, occurred after 1:30 a.m. on June 8, 2014, when the defendants S.L. H. M. and I. H. H. went, "aboard a zodiac-type boat", to the area "known as the Robayna-Haría pool, carrying 23 bundles of hashish".
M. T. G. K., O. M. R., and G. H. M. were waiting for them on the shore, who, in the company of another person who could not be identified, loaded the bundles into a Nissan Primastar van, owned by one of them. Two of the defendants got into the launch vehicle, a Kia Prego van, and followed by the other van carrying the drugs, began the journey along the road that leads from Mala to Arrieta.
The bundles, weighing 683.79 kilos and which would have reached a value of more than 1,020,000 euros on the illicit market, "were seized" when the van in which they were carrying them "was abandoned" on a dirt road near the roundabout that connects the Teguise-San Bartolomé road with the LZ 402 road.
