The autonomous community of the Canary Islands registered the highest divorce rate in Spain during the third quarter of the current year 2025. The Statistics Service of the General Council of the Judiciary certified this Monday, December 15, that the islands recorded between July and September of the current year 41.9 marital breakups per 100,000 inhabitants, the highest rate in the national territory along with that of the Balearic Islands.
The second highest rate was in the Valencian Community (39.5), and the third, Murcia (37). The national average was 33.8
According to the report released this Monday, between July and September 2025, the civil courts of the Archipelago registered a total of 938 lawsuits for separations, divorces, or annulments of marriages, a 15.9% decrease compared to the third quarter of 2024 (1,116).
The lowest rates of marital dissolutions in the analyzed period corresponded to the Basque Country (26.2), Castile and León (26.4), and Cantabria (31.1)
The total number of marriage dissolution lawsuits – annulments, separations, and divorces – filed in the third quarter of this year across Spain was 16,444, representing a 14.9% decrease compared to the same quarter in 2024, according to data collected by the Statistics Service of the General Council of the Judiciary.
Between July 1 and September 30, all types of demand decreased, with the exception of consensual divorces, including annulments.
Nearly 4,400 uncontested divorce lawsuits
In the period analyzed, 4,417 uncontested divorce lawsuits were filed, with this type of lawsuit experiencing the sharpest year-on-year decrease, at 40.8 percent; also very significant was the downward variation in uncontested separation lawsuits (147), which was 21%.Regarding consensual lawsuits, consensual divorce filings (11,437) increased by 2.2% while consensual separation filings (432) decreased by 8.9%.In July, August, and September of this year, 11 nullity lawsuits were filed, just one less than in the third quarter of 2024Relating the divorce filings to the population as of January 1, 2025, it can be observed that the national average stood at 33.8 filings per 100,000 inhabitants
Above the national average were the Canary Islands and the Balearic Islands, with 41.9; the Valencian Community, with 39.5; Murcia, with 37; Aragon, with 36.3; La Rioja, with 34.9; Asturias and Castilla-La Mancha, with 34.3; and Navarre, with 34.2.
Below the national average were the Basque Country, with 26.2; Castile and León, with 26.4; Cantabria, with 31.1; the Community of Madrid, with 31.5; Galicia, with 31.6; Extremadura, with 32.7; and Catalonia and Andalusia, with 33.3
