The Lanzarote Council and the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC) have signed a collaboration agreement to guarantee the celebration of the Lanzarote Summer University for the next four years, until 2028.
"The agreement consolidates a stable academic program in Lanzarote, aligned with the needs of the environment and at the service of the citizens," explain from the Council.
Its president, Oswaldo Betancort, highlighted that after verifying the positive impact of the first edition, this agreement responds to a "strategic vision of the island, which turns the Summer University into a long-term tool".
Betancort insisted that “the Summer University should be a continuous commitment to promote training, critical thinking and culture, while strengthening the positioning of Lanzarote and La Graciosa as an educational enclave”.
For her part, the Councilor for Education of the Cabildo, Ascensión Toledo, stressed that this agreement allows guaranteeing a stable, diverse and adapted program to the interests of the students. “We are talking about courses, workshops and cultural activities that enrich academic life and have a great impact on sectors such as tourism, sustainability or innovation”, she pointed out.
According to Toledo, “the Summer University will be a useful tool in the coming years for those who wish to continue training in their environment, without having to move off the island, and with the academic support of an institution such as the ULPGC”.
The agreement contemplates, among other commitments, the certification of the courses with an ECTS credit, the technical advice of the ULPGC in the planning and execution of the contents, and the incorporation of complementary activities such as concerts, exhibitions, cinema or theater.
The coordination of this event will be carried out by the direction of the University School of Tourism of Lanzarote and by the Vice-Rectorate of Culture, Sports and Society of the ULPGC.
The Lanzarote Summer University celebrated its first edition in July 2025 with an excellent reception from both students and teachers and the social agents involved.
Under the motto “Sports events and tourist destinations”, the training program, coordinated by the University School of Tourism of Lanzarote, offered specialized workshops, round tables and complementary cultural activities that combined academic rigor with social projection.
Participation exceeded initial forecasts, with a notable interest from university students and professionals in the sector. The quality of the content, the practical approach of the workshops and the involvement of the invited teachers, added to the institutional support of the Cabildo de Lanzarote and the ULPGC, consolidated the Summer University as a training space of reference in the insular field.
“The success of this first edition has been key to taking the step towards a stable agreement”, assured Councilor Ascensión Toledo. “The response was unanimously positive and demonstrated that Lanzarote demands spaces for thought, reflection and specialization adapted to its reality”.
