The growth of tourism in Lanzarote does not stop. Such is the case that with more than three million tourists, it is the third Canary Island in number of vacation visitors, only behind Tenerife (more than five million) and Gran Canaria (more than 3.7 million). This is reflected in the data from the Canary Islands Institute of Statistics, edited by Promotur, based on 2023 figures.
Despite these figures, the arrival of visitors does not translate into greater spending at the destination. Two out of five tourists who arrive in Lanzarote do so through the contracting of a travel package, being the island of the Archipelago in which fewer visitors resort to this option, but reaching almost half of the tourists.
Travelers who use the package spend an average of 1,349 euros on the trip, the second lowest expenditure in the Canary Islands, only behind La Palma. However, most of the money is allocated to the plane and accommodation, dedicating only 260 euros in the total trip to other expenses.
In contrast, tourists who travel without a package spend less on the total trip, reducing costs on plane tickets and accommodation and leaving more money on other concepts.
Taking into account the more than three million tourists who arrived on the island in 2023, according to Frontur, tourist companies billed 3,508 million euros in Lanzarote alone. The figure amounts to 19,565 million euros in all of the Canary Islands. Of this money, most of the profits are concentrated in Tenerife (38.8%) and Gran Canaria (27.9%).
Beyond the flight, tourists usually invest an average of 121.2 euros per day on the island, which includes accommodation expenses. Meanwhile, Lanzarote is the analyzed Canary Island, excluding La Gomera and El Hierro, where they spend fewer days, around 8.9 days.
In addition, flights are mostly purchased from the airline (56.6% of cases)
Of the tourist spending in Lanzarote, accommodation reaches 60% of the disbursement, with an average of 821 euros between the stay and the extra expenses in these spaces. Regarding mobility, plane tickets represent the other large amount, around 390 euros on average, to which are added the expenses in car rental (around 116 euros), taxis (about 76 euros), passages between islands (around 60 euros) and public transport that is in last place, about 28.
The highest spending on leisure: nightclubs
Thus, during their stay they invest more money in leisure than in food. Such is the case that on average they pay 191 euros in restaurants or cafeterias and only 99 in supermarkets. Meanwhile, they spend more than 482 on leisure. Among them, 95 euros in nightclubs; 88 on organized excursions; 79 euros on sports activities; 68 euros on wellness, 62 on amusement parks; 46 on cultural activities; and 44 on museums.
On average, they allocate 265 euros to buy properties in the islands and 75 euros on souvenirs from the trip.
The visitor profile
The profile of the Lanzarote visitor is 51.9% female, with an average age of 48 years. The most frequent ages are between 31 and over 60.
In addition, five out of ten tourists are employees, while two out of ten are retired and one out of ten is self-employed. Entrepreneurs (5.8%) or students (2.9%) are less common profiles, as well as the unemployed (0.8%) or people dedicated to housework (0.7%).
Thus, the households that visit the island range between 25,000 euros net per year up to 75,000 euros. In addition, they are usually mostly tourists with higher education (75.2%).
In this line, about half of the travelers come to the island on a couple's trip, while one in ten does so accompanied by other relatives. Lanzarote is the favorite Canary Island for families traveling with children (19.6%).
In addition, the main reasons for the trip are vacations and leisure to rest. Only three out of ten travelers come to the island attracted by its landscapes or its environmental environment, while 75.1% do so because of the climate.
About six out of ten tourists arrive in Lanzarote after having made previous visits to the Canary Islands and five out of ten are informed through the internet or social networks, while two out of ten are organized as tour operators or travel agencies.
