Sustainable tourism is no longer a trend and is consolidated as a definitive value. 79% of booking.com users are considering making their reservations in accommodations that are more responsible with the environment.

In line with this, the leading accommodation booking company introduced a few months ago a classification of sustainable establishments with 3 levels that are very visible to customers according to the number of practices implemented per accommodation.

Only 16.6% of tourist establishments in Lanzarote show one of the aforementioned three levels of sustainability on booking.com, according to an analysis carried out by Ekonomus. Together with El Hierro (16.5%), Lanzarote is the Canary Island with the fewest number of environmental markers on booking.com.

This does not necessarily mean that the hotels or tourist homes on two of the islands most aware of sustainability in the archipelago are less respectful of the environment, but rather that many have not yet filled out the internal survey with the platform to obtain their level of sustainability.

To do this, establishments have to explain to Booking in their extranet the sustainability practices they carry out. Depending on their location and the practices they follow, the platform calculates an overall impact score.

In contrast, La Graciosa, with 25.7%, is currently the island with the highest proportion of accommodations that show any of the sustainability levels proposed by the platform.

Next is La Gomera, where 24.4% of establishments show any of the environmental badges.

In Tenerife they reach 20%, while in La Palma and Gran Canaria they rise to 19.9% and 18.6% respectively. In Fuerteventura they are 18.4%.
