Unemployment has risen for the first time in 15 months in Lanzarote, with a total of 9,702 unemployed in the month of July, 64 more than the previous month, according to a report by the Canarian Employment Observatory (OBECAN), collected by the Lanzarote Data Center.
Specifically, the island had not experienced an increase in unemployed since April 2021, when 19,903 unemployed people were registered. Since then, the numbers had only fallen until July 2022.
However, if the figures for July 2021 are taken into account, the fall is still very pronounced, at 42.2%, since at that time unemployment stood at 16,779 people, or what is the same, 7,077 more unemployed.
By municipalities, Arrecife concentrates more than half of the unemployed, with a total of 5,032 people, followed by San Bartolomé with 1,105 and Teguise with 1,089. Tías is also above the 1,000 mark, with 1,029 unemployed.
Among the areas with less unemployment are Yaiza, with 693, Tinajo with 394 and, finally, Haría is the municipality with the least unemployment in Lanzarote, with only 360 people.
Regarding the profile of job seekers, women are still the majority, with 5,708 women compared to 3,994 men.
In addition, those with the least unemployment are, by far, young people. People between 20 and 24 years old accounted for 327 people in total and those between 25 and 29 years old, 696. Meanwhile, adults over 55 years old have the worst part, since the age group between 55 and 59 years old registers 1,636 unemployed.
Regarding education, people with more education tend to be less unemployed, or at least that is what the OBECAN data reflect, which indicate that more than half of the unemployed in July (5,634) had only primary education, compared to 596 who had university studies and 452 who had a FP.
Finally, it should be noted that, as usual, the services sector is the one with the most unemployment, with a total of 4,292 people, followed by the hotel industry with 1,563 and the industry with 2,090.
