The Canary Islands has 207,156 people registered as unemployed in January 2022 and 55,615 employed, according to the statistical summary of the SEPE in the first month of the year. Regarding the number of unemployed in each province, Las Palmas has 106,879 people in this situation and Santa Cruz has 100,277.
At the regional level, there are 116,914 unemployed women, of which 5,819 are under 25 years of age. With regard to men, 6,745 unemployed are under 25 and 83,497 correspond to the rest of the ages.
In both the total regional count and in that of each of the provinces, the number of women is higher than that of men. This trend ceases to be repeated in those under 25 years of age.
Las Palmas de Gran Canaria
In the province of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria there are 45,866 unemployed men and 61,013 women. 6,757 people are under 25 years of age and 100,122 are in the remaining age groups.
In relation to those under 25 years of age, there are 473 more men than women in a situation of unemployment. Of the total people that form this group, 3,142 are women and the remaining 3,615 are men. While in the other group there are more women who are not working, specifically 57,871.
Santa Cruz de Tenerife
In the province of the western islands, the total count of people registered as unemployed totals 100,277. Of which, 55,901 are women and 44,376 are men. The unemployed under 25 years of age are 5,807 and the remaining 94,470 people belong to the rest of the ages group.
The unemployed women under 25 are 2,677, 453 more than men. In relation to the other age group, men total 41,246 people and women 53,224.
The registered unemployment according to economic activity
When breaking down the total number of unemployed based on the sector of economic activity, at a global level of the archipelago, the service sector is the one with the highest number of people (158,149), followed by construction (20,332). The sector with the lowest unemployment is agriculture, which has 4,430 people.
The trend between the number of registered unemployed and the economic sector follows the same trend from highest to lowest number in the total of the archipelago as in both provinces, with the service sector having the highest number, followed by construction, of people who previously did not have employment, of the industry and, in last place, agriculture.
The activities in which there is less difference between the two provinces are industry and people who do not have previous employment, where Las Palmas has 28 and 31 more people, respectively. On the contrary, the greatest difference is reflected in the service sector, where Las Palmas has 6,613 more unemployed than Santa Cruz.
In the province of Las Palmas, the service sector totals 82,381 unemployed, construction 10,366, and the one with the lowest number is agriculture with 1,980. In Santa Cruz de Tenerife, services has 75,768 unemployed, construction 9,966 and agriculture 2,450.
