Canary Islands reduces unemployment more than any other autonomous region and approaches one million employed

The archipelago registered the largest drop in unemployment in the first quarter in the entire country. There were 14,500 people in relation to the previous quarter, according to data from the latest Active Population Survey (EPA)

Canary Islands recorded the largest drop in unemployment in the first quarter, a period in which this indicator decreased by 14,500 people in relation to the previous quarter, that is, by 7.7%, according to data from the EPA released this Friday by the National Institute of Statistics (INE), which puts the number of unemployed in the archipelago at 174,200 people.

In year-on-year terms, unemployment has fallen in the Canary Islands by 27,900 people in the last year, which represents a decrease of 13.81% and the unemployment rate is 14.88%, while the activity rate stands at 60.20%.

The active population of the islands, made up of 1,170 people, has decreased by 4,700 people during the first quarter of 2024 in relation to the previous one, -0.40%, although it has grown by 18,900, 1.64% in relation to the same period of 2023.

In this context, the number of employed at the end of last March in the Canary Islands amounted to 996,200 people, that is, 9,800 more than those counted at the end of December 2023, 0.99% more.

Regarding the first quarter of last year, the Canary Islands has seen its number of employed increase by 46,800 people, that is, by 4.93%, according to INE data.

At the end of last March, the population of the Canary Islands over 16 years of age reached 1.9 million people, which is 3,500 more than the previous quarter, 0.18% more, and 26,900 more people than those counted at the end of March 2023, which represents an interannual increase of 1.40%.
