"A total of 3,722 tourists were affected this Thursday by the strike that the workers of the company Swissport Handling are maintaining indefinitely at the Lanzarote Airport", according to the Federation of Services to the Citizenry of the Canary Islands Trade Union Confederation.
"Of the total of 42 flights scheduled for that day, 37 were covered by the abusive minimum services decreed by the Ministry of Development. However, up to a total of 19 flights suffered delays ranging between one and two hours, affecting a total of 3,722 passengers. The delays accumulated throughout the day and skyrocketed on the last flights of the day. The last five flights of the day departed after twelve o'clock at night and had to leave without their passengers' luggage, leaving their suitcases (802) on the island due to lack of personnel at the end of their working day," they add.
The unions denounce the "absolute disinterest of the company in sitting down to dialogue and resolve this conflict, even refusing to hold a meeting. Likewise, there is no evidence that they have responded to the letter from the president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote in which he requested a meeting with the company and with the management of the Airport." For this reason, the unions have turned to the Canary Islands Labor Court to mediate in the conflict and force the company to meet with the workers.
