The Council of Ministers will approve this Tuesday the allocation of 363.7 million euros to finance metropolitan public transport in 2025 in Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, and the Canary Islands (47.5 million), according to sources from the Ministry of Transport.
The granting of these aids is conditional on having a Sustainable Mobility Plan by the beneficiaries that is consistent with the Spanish Sustainable Mobility Strategy 2030, with the aim that this subsidy acts as an incentive to deploy this instrument for the organization and planning of mobility.
Specifically, the Ministry of Transport will allocate 126.89 million euros to the Regional Transport Consortium of Madrid; 149.3 million to the Autoritat del Transport Metropolità of Barcelona; 40 million to the Autoritat del Transport Metropolità of Valencia; and 47.5 million to the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands.
According to ministry sources, transport in these metropolitan areas is characterized by a significant volume of affected population, high intensity of travel, the participation of various administrations in its management, and the impact of its operation on economic activity.
The direct granting of these subsidies represents "an identical investment effort" to that of 2023 and 2024, which, according to the ministry, demonstrates the Government's clear commitment to promoting public transport.
These subsidies are in addition to the rest of the aid this 2025, destined to finance the implementation of free public transport for children under 14 years of age, 50% discounts on season tickets and multi-trip tickets for young people, or the reduction of fares on the rest of season tickets and multi-trip tickets by at least 40%.
Likewise, the Ministry of Transport also highlights the Verano Joven program, which in 2025 has achieved a record number of users and trips with more than 6.8 million trips made by train and bus, with discounts of up to 90%, between July and September.
