The Regulatory Council of the Protected Designation of Origin of Lanzarote Wines will be distinguished with the 'Sustainable Viticulture' award granted by the Agrotourism and Wine Tourism Chair of the Canary Islands of the Canary Islands Institute of Agri-Food Quality and the University of La Laguna and Bodegas 'El Grifo', within the framework of the 'International Technical Conference on Sustainable Viticulture' to be held on November 2, 3, and 4 in Lanzarote.
This distinction recognizes the effort of the winegrowers, wineries, and technical personnel attached to the Regulatory Council, who since its foundation in 1993, have maintained the work of viticulture on the island, ensuring a sustainable exploitation of natural resources and the maintenance of a unique agricultural landscape, based on continuous effort and sacrifices by generations.
International Technical Conference on Sustainable Viticulture
The award ceremony will be the starting point for the 'International Technical Conference on Sustainable Viticulture' in Lanzarote, which will take place on Friday, November 3 at the Hotel Paradisus Salinas Lanzarote, with the inaugural conference 'Ecological transition and sustainable agriculture: facing the challenges of the future', by the researcher and Coordinator of international R&D&I projects, of the Department of Agricultural Engineering and Natural Environment of the University of La Laguna Noelia Cruz Pérez. And it will continue with two other speakers in the morning, 'Wine Technology Platform: Innovation as an engine towards sustainable viticulture', by Andrea Casquete Bureba. R&D&I Technician and Project Manager of the PTV, and 'Sustainable vineyards in Brazil: key points of action', Leonardo Cury da Silva, Professor of Viticulture at the Instituto de Educação Ciência e Tecnologia do Rio Grande do Sul - IFRS.
Later in the afternoon of the same day, there will be a space to learn about sustainable viticulture experiences that are being developed in the Canary Islands, with the participation of Fabio Quintero Armas, Agricultural Technical Engineer of the Insular Federation of Associations of the Wine Sector of Gran Canaria, Rubén Barroso Martínez. Researcher at the Institute of Natural Products and Agrobiology (IPNA - CSIC), Raúl García González. Advisor to small winegrowers and winemakers in the Canary Islands, responsible for the 'SENTITERRA Project', and Elisa Ludeña Castillo. Technical Director: oenologist at 'Bodegas El Grifo'.
It will feature a round table in which the challenges of viticulture in the Canary Islands will be discussed, will be one of the most interesting moments of the conference, as it will bring together the CEO of Bodegas El Grifo, Marian Otamendi, the Manager of the Regulatory Council of the DOP of Lanzarote Wines Nereida Pérez González, the member of the Association of Oenologists of the Canary Islands, Loreto Pancorbo Aldazabal, the President of the Association of Professionals and Technicians of Viticulture of the Canary Islands, Tomás Mesa Guanchey and the Head of the Oenological Unit of the Canary Islands Institute of Agri-Food Quality. The Master Of Wine David Forer, together with the researcher and member of the Agrotourism and Wine Tourism Chair of the Canary Islands Jesús de las Heras Roger, will be in charge of guiding a wine tasting of the archipelago for the attendees of the Conference.
El Grifo and regenerative viticulture
On Saturday, November 4, the conference will conclude with an interpreted visit to 'Bodegas El Grifo' by the oenology team, who will show the participants the practices they develop on regenerative viticulture, especially the research project 'Winter Harvest', which brings together different winegrowers who have plots on the island of Lanzarote, and who firmly believe in this sustainable future that is no longer distant.
