The Minister of Tourism of the Government of the Canary Islands, Rita Martín, assured this Wednesday that the consequences of the controllers' strike "could be as catastrophic" as those of the Icelandic volcano, last April, when thousands of flights were diverted or canceled due to restrictions in the airspace due to the presence of the ash cloud.

"If the planes do not arrive or are diverted to other places, there will be an impact on commerce, accommodation...?", said Martín, who participated together with the mayor of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Jerónimo Saavedra, in a public event.

In this sense, the councilor asked for "responsibility" from the controllers in the face of the strike they have called in the second half of August, a month in which "1.5 million tourists will move" through the Canary Islands airports, as she explained.

Martín regretted that the "imminent" call for a strike by the controllers occurs when the sector is beginning to show signs of recovery, for which she described it as "crucial" that the Ministry of Development "minimize its consequences on the tourism sector", while asking the group of controllers to "attend to their responsibility to the fullest".
