The port of Huelva has allocated more than five million euros to the launch of a passenger terminal, port services and inspection control of Police and customs in the South Dock, which will respond to the growth in the number of passengers and general cargo traffic between Huelva and the islands of Lanzarote, Gran Canaria and Tenerife.

During the first eleven months of 2022, the number of passengers on the regular maritime lines Huelva-Canary Islands had exceeded 64,900 users, which represents an increase of 48% compared to the same period of the previous year.

The building of the new passenger terminal and services has a large overhang that forms the main access for passengers, as well as an extensive green surface that covers the entire top. The terminal consists of three floors and occupies a total area of 2,392 square meters in the esplanade of the South Dock located next to the existing ro-ro ramp, where the ferry-type ships that make the connections between Huelva and the Canary Islands dock.

The passenger terminal, equipped with all the services associated with these, will allow the development of security, telecommunications, passenger control and port management functions. Therefore, the new facilities house the security access controls for the National Police and Civil Guard, passenger controls and customs clearance.

Great growth in passengers to the Canary Islands and transport of automobiles

Likewise, they host different waiting areas for passengers, cafeteria, information point, check-in and sale of tickets, as well as several offices for the management of the shipping companies that operate the different regular lines.

The South Dock has five weekly connections with the Canary Islands, four of them with ro-pax ferry-type ships (goods and passengers) and one connection with a container ship. To promote this market, the Port of Huelva created the Huelva-Canary Islands Route1400 a year ago, with which it has promoted the involvement of the different shipping companies in the promotion of these maritime connections.

Regarding the road transport of goods, in the first eleven months of 2022, a total of 27,216 intermodal transport units have used these Huelva-Canary Islands connections, which represents a growth of 29.3%.

Likewise, the number of automobiles under the passenger regime has amounted to 36,734 units, 50% more than between the months of January and November of the previous year. The number of vehicles under the merchandise regime has reached 9,183 units, 69% more than the same period of the previous year.
