The Cabildo of Lanzarote convenes an informative talk aimed at farmers, as well as the island's wine and winery sector to address the situation of the phylloxera plague, recently detected in Tenerife. The meeting will take place next Wednesday, September 24, at 6:00 p.m., in the Assembly Hall of the Cabildo of Lanzarote.

The session will include the participation of the island's president, Oswaldo Betancort García; the Deputy Minister of the Primary Sector of the Government of the Canary Islands, Eduardo García Cabello; the director of the Canarian Institute of Agri-Food Quality (ICCA), Luis Arráez Guadalupe; and the head of the Plant Health Service of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Food Sovereignty, Antonio González Hernández.

The objective of this meeting is to inform the sector about the evolution of the plague and explain the urgent measures established by the Order of August 20, 2025, which declares the fight against phylloxera to be of public utility and establishes eradication and control actions to prevent its spread.

The president of the Cabildo and head of the Department of Agriculture, Oswaldo Betancort, points out the importance of this informative call, which is added to the roadmap recently approved together with the Regulatory Council of the DO Vinos de Lanzarote.

“From the first moment”, Betancort emphasizes, “we have acted with responsibility and speed, approving a package of urgent measures to protect our vineyard. This talk is an opportunity for the sector to receive direct information from the administrations and experts, reinforcing prevention and coordination against this threat.”

The president also recalls that the best tool against phylloxera is the collaboration of the sector and citizens. “The vineyard of Lanzarote is a unique heritage in the world, an essential part of our identity and the engine of our economy through wine and wine tourism. We must work together to prevent phylloxera from reaching our island and, for this, prevention and collective responsibility are essential.”
