The average age of the car fleet in the Canary Islands increases again in 2023 and reaches 15.2 years old as
indicated in the latest Annual Report of the Spanish Association of Automobile and Truck Manufacturers (ANFAC). The previous year the average age was 15 years.

Regarding the total number of vehicles circulating on the roads of the archipelago, more than half are over 15 years old (52.6%), a rate that is 4.1 percentage points higher than the national average (48.5%).

Regarding the vehicle fleet based on DGT labels, Label 0 have increased by 53.8% their presence in 2023 and ECO Label by 40%.

However, this type of vehicle only represents 3.6% of the total of the Canarian car park. For their part, vehicles with Label C have increased by 7.1% compared to last year, with nearly 7,000,000 units.

Vehicles without environmental badge constituted 30.7% of the total, and label B represented 22.3% of the park, adding more than 850,000 vehicles. However, vehicles without a label fell by more than 3% compared to the previous year.

Regarding the vehicle fleet by energy source, pure electric vehicles total 9,853 vehicles, which represent only 0.6% of the total fleet.

For their part, plug-in hybrids (PHEV) in 2023 circulated 7,395 vehicles, around 0.5% of the total fleet in the region.

According to the employers' association, to continue a positive trend in terms of electrification, it is necessary to improve the quality (ultra-fast charging stations of more than 150kW), quantity and capillarity of publicly available charging stations.

During the first quarter of 2024, according to data from the ANFAC Electromobility Barometer, the public access charging infrastructure in the community has reached 1,286 charging points operational, however, 87.8% of access points are still slow charging or less than 22kW.

In addition to the 1,286 public access charging points available, there are another 398 that are out of service.
