The Ministry of Ecological Transition of the Government of the Canary Islands has reported that, in the first five months of 2022 alone, more than 12 MW of photovoltaic power has been installed for self-consumption, which is practically tripling the annual power installed during the year 2019.
José Antonio Valbuena, regional councilor of the area, detailed that the total power installed for this type of renewable energy in the self-consumption mode has currently exceeded 41 MW globally, compared to less than 9 MW that had been installed until 2019.
For its part, the number of installations has also registered a notable increase, since it has gone from 343 installations to practically 4,000 in the aforementioned time interval. "At this point in the year, the figure of 1,575 registered photovoltaic self-consumption installations has already been reached, which means exceeding the accumulated amount of installations for the entire year 2021, which stood at 1,518," explains Valbuena.
"This obvious trend has a lot to do with two key aspects such as the increase in aid that is being promoted from the different administrations, at all levels, and the growing interest of citizens in this type of energy alternatives to face the rise that we have experienced in the electricity bill in the last year," he added.
Likewise, Miguel Ángel Pérez, the Deputy Minister of Ecological Transition, pointed out that the islands with the highest installed power in 2022 have been Gran Canaria (5.3 MW), Tenerife (4.2 MW), Fuerteventura (1.1 MW) and Lanzarote (1 MW).
Finally, the regional director of Energy, Rosana Melián, recalled that the call for aid related to the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan for self-consumption and storage in the Canary Islands, endowed with more than 18 million euros, is currently open. Those interested can access this subsidy through the web link: https://sede.gobiernodecanarias.org/sede/procedimientos_servicios/tramites/7011 .
"Since the launch of this call, in 2021, we have received a total of 2,739 applications," he indicated. This aid has a deadline for submitting applications until December 2023, although the Canarian Government could request an increase in the item in case the enabled budget is exhausted.
