The Government of the Canary Islands demanded at Monday's meeting of the Fiscal and Financial Policy Council held in Madrid an autonomous financing "adjusted to the needs" of the islands, and that the State comply with what "by right" corresponds to the autonomous community.

The vice president of the Canarian Executive, Manuel Domínguez (PP) assured that the archipelago is not so interested in debt forgiveness as in improving its autonomous financing.

"The Canary Islands, in all that remains of negotiations with the central government, will demand what is rightfully ours. What is it? A new autonomous financing adjusted to the needs of this land, not only in the forgiveness of debt - which is not as good for the Canary Islands as for other communities - but also the rules of spending, for example," Domínguez indicated.

The Canarian Minister of Finance, Matilde Asián (PP), in statements upon her arrival at the meeting at the Ministry of Finance, indicated that the distribution of state money to the autonomous communities must respond to "equitable criteria".

For his part, the spokesperson for the regional Executive, Alfonso Cabello (CC), explained that they are satisfied that, after so much demanding it, the Council has been convened because it is the place "where relations between the communities and the State Government open up", and not in bilaterality.
