The Arrecife City Council, through the concessionaire company Ferrovial Servicios, has launched the awareness campaign "Arrecife, city with roots". This initiative aims to raise awareness among the population about the importance of vegetation, trees and shrubs in urban environments.
To achieve this objective, the capital Consistory has designed a series of photographs, in which, through photographic techniques, the vegetation has been removed from different locations in the city. The importance of the presence of these trees and shrubs is not only in the evident landscape impact, but the campaign highlights the multiple contributions to the urban environment, which directly affect the health of the environment and the health of its inhabitants.
Thus, in "Arrecife, city with roots" the benefits for citizens of having these green spaces are pointed out: oxygen supply, CO2 retention, shade areas, reduction of local temperature by several degrees, humidity supply, substrate retention and prevention of soil loss by runoff, reduction of the greenhouse effect, mental well-being and social well-being, among others.
In this way, the campaign wants to emphasize the importance of the presence of these elements and the need to continue implementing areas with vegetation in the city. The Arrecife City Council also points out the relevance of citizen collaboration for the maintenance of green infrastructures, which does not depend exclusively on the services contracted for this purpose, nor on the human and technical resources available. Therefore, this project is based on raising awareness about the multiple benefits that these elements bring to the environmental improvement of cities and the health of their inhabitants.
The campaign is subsidized with funds from the Public Contract, improvements to the Contract, between the Arrecife City Council and the Concessionaire Ferrovial Servicios, responsible for the maintenance and care of the public gardens of the municipality of Arrecife since October 2016. In said contract, an amount of 10,000 euros per year has been allocated, which must be spent on environmental awareness campaigns, paid for by the company and designed and agreed upon by the Arrecife City Council.
