The Ministry of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands reports that, according to the results of the Hospital Discharge Satisfaction Survey (ESAH), which measures the quality and satisfaction of the population treated in the hospitals of the Canary Islands Health Service (SCS), users and patients admitted during 2023 rate the care received in these hospitals with an average of 8.56 points.
Regarding the services, the pain units, spinal cord injury units, infectious disease units or rachis, among other Special Services, were the best valued by the people surveyed, with an average score of 9.14. They are followed by medical services, with 8.79, and surgical services, with 8.68.
Pediatrics services obtain 8.56; Gynecology-Obstetrics, 8.35 and Psychiatry services obtain an average score of 8.02.
Likewise, 97.3 and 98.1 percent of patients express their satisfaction with the care received from medical and nursing staff, respectively.
Relationship with staff
Regarding the relationship between patients and hospital staff, 74.2% of those surveyed say they know the name of their doctor, 94.8% say that the ward staff addressed them by name and 97.8% indicate that the SCS professionals respected their privacy. In relation to health evolution and medical tests, 95% of those surveyed state that they were provided with clear information on these issues, 96.7% that they were informed and asked for consent before interventions or tests and 89.8% of users had time to read, understand and sign the informed consent.
Reception and accommodation
83.9% of those surveyed say they received information about the operation of the hospital ward, schedules and visits and, regarding the cleanliness of the rooms, 92.7% of those surveyed rated it very positively.
Likewise, 90.3% of the users and patients surveyed say that the SCS hospitals are well signposted.
Obstetrics and Gynecology
Regarding care in the delivery room, 97% of patients rate it as very positive.
On the other hand, 89.1% of users say they have received information about the benefits of breastfeeding and 90 percent about newborn care.
Sample profile
The sample collected to carry out this study of public hospitals in the Canary Islands was 3,611 users, of which 53% were women and 47% men. Regarding the age of the population surveyed, the largest number of individuals is in the age groups of 50 to 69 and 70 years or more.
Of the total number of patients, 53.1% had a stay of less than five days. In addition, of the surveys carried out by foreign users, 102 were in English, 19 in German and 29 in French.
