The Minister of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands, Blas Trujillo, has formally requested this Friday to the Secretary of State for Health the incorporation of one hundred military trackers the incorporation of one hundred military trackers the work of monitoring COVID cases in the Autonomous Community. The request is made after a telephone meeting between the Government of the Canary Islands and the Minister of Defense, Margarita Robles, where the highest responsible for the Armed Forces pledged to accept and process the Canary request quickly so that this military personnel can join the work of tracking cases in the coming days.

This formal request is made after the Government agreement taken this Thursday in the fifth Extraordinary Government Council held this August by the regional Executive where other measures were also taken such as limiting meetings and events to 10 people on those islands where the Accumulated Incidence of cases at seven days exceeds 100 per 100,000 inhabitants, among others.

At this time the islands that are in this situation are Gran Canaria and Lanzarote. The Ministry of Health will have this information in a dissemination and transparency tool in the coming days in order for both public administrations and citizens to consult this index and its monitoring in an open and updated manner.

The Ministry of Defense has selected for this work health personnel or with health knowledge and with the qualified training necessary to increase the capacity of the autonomous communities.

Canarias will allocate the new troops to primarily support the geographical area of the islands of Gran Canaria and Lanzarote since due to the current epidemiological situation these are the ones that need a greater volume of tracking. However, if the situation worsened on some other island, it could be allocated to other islands or to the tracking tasks that are carried out centrally by the General Directorate of Public Health, especially to the tracking of new cases detected from private centers and institutions, in general.
