The General Directorate of Emergencies of the Government of the Canary Islands has decided to activate the alert status in Tenerife and Gran Canaria due to the visit of Pope Leo XIV to the archipelago this Thursday and Friday.
Specifically, the Canary Executive has applied the Territorial Plan for Civil Protection Emergencies of the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands PLATECA for a mass event, starting at 8:00 AM this Thursday.
It will be the island of Gran Canaria that will be on alert on June 11, that is, this Thursday, due to the Pope's visit. After that, it will be activated on June 12 in Tenerife.
"On the occasion of this event, a preventive security and emergency device has been designed to guarantee the normal development of the programmed acts," the Canary Government has informed.
Thus, the General Directorate of Emergencies has pointed out that this decision is made in view of the forecast of a high influx of people and the foreseen effects on mobility. "It is necessary to reinforce operational coordination, permanent monitoring of the situation, and incident monitoring," it concluded.
