Seismic swarm detected in El Teide, with 755 hybrid events

The magnitude of all of them is less than 0.8 mbLg, the IGN specifies, which also indicates that, interspersed with this swarm, some low-frequency events have been registered

The National Geographic Institute (IGN) has counted a total of 755 hybrid events since 6:00 PM Canary time last Monday in the western area of Las Cañadas del Teide, at a depth of between seven and eight kilometers, an area where seven other seismic swarms have been previously recorded.

According to information provided by the IGN to EFE, a swarm of hybrid seismic events with two distinct phases was registered yesterday afternoon-evening.

Thus, the swarm began with very small events around 6:00 PM and, between 8:00 PM and 9:30 PM, they were observed more clearly in the records.

From 11:14 PM Canary time, a change in the waveforms was observed and the events continued weaker and more spaced out until, from 6:00 AM this Tuesday, they became practically imperceptible, adds the IGN.

The joint analysis of the series indicates that this seismovolcanic activity has been located in the western area of Las Cañadas del Teide, an area where seismic swarms of similar characteristics have been recorded in October 2016, June 2019, June and July 2022, November 2024, August 2024, and February 12 of this year.

A total of 755 hybrid events have been counted, although this figure could be lower than the actual number of events since many of them present very weak signals that make their identification in the records difficult.

The magnitude of all of them is less than 0.8 mbLg, the IGN specifies, which also indicates that, interspersed with this swarm, some low-frequency events (called LP events) of greater energy have been registered, of which one at 04:18 hours has stood out as having the greatest amplitude during this past night.
