The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, showed this Sunday the commitment and support of the Executive so that "all material losses" are replaced "as soon as possible" and explained that "sufficient personnel" have been moved to any type of contingency that may arise in the area.
Sánchez pointed out that the Canary Islands institutions and the Government of Spain have collaborated in "an exercise of anticipation" for what "could occur" and have also transmitted "public information to the citizens to raise awareness" in the face of the eruption.
The president highlighted the contribution of science because, in his opinion, "once again" the civil protection system has been able to guarantee "a response" and has been able to anticipate as it happened in other phenomena such as 'Filomena'. Sánchez also assured that he has spoken with King Felipe VI throughout the day and after the meeting of the committee to give him "first-hand information on the state of the situation".
This is how the head of the Executive expressed himself in a statement after joining the meeting of the Steering Committee of the Emergency Plan for Volcanic Risk of the Canary Islands (Pevolca), in which he learned first-hand about the evolution of the volcanic eruption that began this afternoon in the Cabeza de Vaca area, in the municipality of El Paso.
Likewise, he reaffirmed the words of the President of the Canary Islands, Ángel Víctor Torres, on the importance of conveying to the citizens of the island "the guarantee of their safety", while explaining that during this "long" week they have been collaborating, which has allowed them to "carry out an exercise of anticipation", he asserted.
Sánchez also stated that "everything is developing as planned" and, in relation to the personnel that are intervening, he assured that "sufficient personnel have been deployed to deal with any type of contingency" such as, for example, the fires that may occur as a result of the eruption, of which he said they are "very aware".
"Tomorrow we will have a new meeting of the commission at 12:00 in the morning," Sánchez added. "We are going to be here very aware of what the evolution is," he concluded. Finally, he thanked the collaboration of the State Security Forces and Corps, the UME, Forest Firefighters and the Red Cross.
Sánchez arrived on the island of La Palma after postponing his trip to New York that was scheduled for this Sunday and where he was scheduled to speak at the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly.
