The Secretary of Public Health of the Generalitat, Carmen Cabezas, has specified that Catalonia has registered up to this Monday 242 positive cases of coronavirus among students who celebrated the end of the course between June 11 and 20 on some Spanish island, including Tenerife.

Cabezas stressed in a press conference that the detection of positives derived from this type of outbreaks is a "dynamic" process and specified that, for the moment, 132 positives have been identified who traveled to Mallorca, 76 who traveled to Menorca and 34 who traveled to Tenerife on those dates.

In addition, the secretary has detailed that these outbreaks are related to about 1,200 close contacts and highlighted the "very important" work being carried out by the epidemiological surveillance services, with 4,800 calls to contacts and 2,145 diagnostic tests.

In relation to the epidemiological situation, Cabezas regretted that the increase in incidence that Catalonia has been registering since June 16 is maintained, although she clarified that it does not have a repercussion at the care level.

This is because the increase in pandemic indicators is concentrated in unvaccinated ages, especially in those under 29 years of age who have a lower probability of becoming seriously ill from Covid-19 and being admitted to an intensive care unit.

In this sense, Cabezas has asked that a stigma not be generated towards young people because they are "specific outbreaks linked to specific people at a specific time" and, in her opinion, the vast majority of these age groups follow prevention measures.

In the specific case of Tenerife, sources from the Ministry of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands told Europa Press that the young people presented symptoms upon returning to Tarragona and on the island "there was no close contact with the local population." According to them, "once the tracking work has been completed, it has been concluded that there are no affected people on the island."
