The President of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, announced, after his meeting with the Minister of Finance, María Jesús Montero, that the Government of Spain has committed to transfer the fifty million euros that were included in the Budget, in addition to fifty more, “to address the care of unaccompanied minors arriving to the Islands”.
Likewise, the head of the autonomous executive announced that “in early December, both governments will review the justification of expenses and their evaluation to assess whether this amount should be increased, if the modification of the Immigration Law had not been reached by then, which would establish the distribution of minors by the autonomous communities”.
In this sense, the president stressed that both the financial aid and the “expected” agreement for the distribution, “is a matter of common sense because the Canary Islands cannot bear alone all the migratory pressure that is reaching Europe through the Atlantic Route”.
“We have agreed that a definitive response must be given to the migratory phenomenon, regardless of whether more resources are now released to address the immediate reception and the extraordinary situation we are suffering in the islands”, he explained.
For this reason, Fernando Clavijo assured that “we will continue to meet and promote spaces for dialogue to achieve that reform that, without a doubt, will bring tranquility to all governments in this matter”.
Budget
In the meeting, which ended in the early hours of the afternoon, the President of the Canary Islands was also able to address the issues included in the Canarian agenda that are pending the corresponding transfer, and received the intention of the Ministry to have budgets for 2025.
“We have always expressed the need and importance of administrations having public accounts, which allow them to plan the economic response given to the needs of citizens; therefore, we will collaborate in its approval, provided that the Canarian agenda is respected and the commitments acquired are fulfilled”, Clavijo concluded.
