The Government of the Canary Islands will ask the State to temporarily halt the small pelagic purse-seine fishing fleet in view of the decrease in species such as mackerel and horse mackerel in Canarian waters, which fishermen have warned of, stating that their situation is "critical".
The Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Food Sovereignty, Narvay Quintero, has made this commitment in response to requests from the Fishermen's Association of Nuestra Señora de La Luz, from Playa San Juan, and from the Regional Federation, the regional department reported this Friday in a statement.
During the meeting, the fishermen pointed out that in recent years there has been a drastic decrease in the catches of these species as a result of their displacement to other locations, which has led to fishermen and shipowners finding themselves in a critical situation that compromises the economic viability of their activity.
After an analysis of the situation by all the actors involved, those present agreed to study in depth the possibilities of implementing measures to mitigate the loss of income suffered by this sector.
