The bay of Arrecife has been this weekend the scene of the J80 Finals Series – Isla de Volcanes Trophy, a competition that brought together the eight best national teams of the class and offered a great show in the only day of regattas disputed. The Brito Hostelería, skippered by Pedro de León, was the most regular of the event organized by the Real Club Náutico de Arrecife, which had the support of the Spanish Association of J80, the Royal Spanish Sailing Federation, the Royal Canary Sailing Federation, and also the Government of the Canary Islands, the Cabildo de Lanzarote and the City Council of Arrecife.
On Saturday, the twelve scheduled qualifying series races could be held, with the eight participating boats facing each other in groups of four. The day began with a wind blowing from the northeast and that was rolling with the passage of hours towards the southeast, and end the afternoon with a wind from the northeast. The regatta field was located in the bay of Arrecife, and fans could enjoy the navigation of the boats from land.
The Brito Hostelería made its local status prevail and proved to know perfectly the regatta field in which the races were held. The boat skippered by Pedro de León scored the partial victory in the first three races held, and in the next three added two new partial victories and a second place, ending the day as leader of the general classification.
For Sunday was scheduled the celebration of the final day of the J80 Finals Series – Isla de Volcanes Trophy, but the weather reports made it impossible for the participating boats to go out to the water during the morning. To ensure the safety of the participants, the organizers decided to suspend the day of regattas.
With the suspension of the last day, the Brito Hostelería is proclaimed champion of the national competition, boat that belongs to the Real Club Náutico de Arrecife and that had Pedro de León, Eduardo Brito, Marcos Peraza and Juan Pablo Betancor as sailors. The second place went to the Decoexsa of the Real Club Náutico de San Sebastián and the podium was completed with the third position of the Pezoas.
The J80 Finals Series – Isla de Volcanes Trophy concluded with the awards ceremony, an event that took place in the halls of the Real Club Náutico de Arrecife. An awards ceremony that was attended by the president of the club, Julio Romero, and who was accompanied by Luis de Mira, vice president of the J80 class, Rafael Bonilla, president of the Royal Canary Sailing Federation, Juan Monzón, Minister of Sports of the Cabildo de Lanzarote, and Óscar López and Roberto Herbón, both representing the City Council of Arrecife.
