Yonathan and the Fair of Absurdities

Sometimes, surrealism is not in museums, but in municipal plenary sessions. And Arrecife, with all its problems of housing, meager public services and neighborhoods abandoned to their fate, has decided to invest half a million euros (yes, 550,000 euros, without blushing) in a fair. A fair. As if the city council were run by Esperanza Gracia and thought that the best way to attract good energy is by planting colorful carousels and LED lights around the city.

Has anyone asked about the people who sleep in their cars because they can't afford rent? No. But hey, let's not miss the attractions! After all, who needs decent housing when you can ride the Ferris wheel and forget that you don't have a roof over your head?

Mr. Yonathan de León, mayor and now also master of ceremonies of the Spending Fair, has achieved the unthinkable: that the neighbors go from indignation to astonishment.

Because it is one thing to manage badly, and another is to manage as if this were an episode of "La que se avecina". And meanwhile, young people continue to emigrate because there are no opportunities here, the streets are broken, and getting an appointment in social services is like winning the lottery.

But hey, let no one say that Arrecife does not have a fair! Of course, the next time there are not enough resources for a senior center or emergency aid, let's remember that at least we have fond memories riding the crazy cup.

Priorities, Yonathan. Priorities.
