Think Green

November 20 2020 (13:23 WET)

In the psychoanalyst we would all have drawn a tree, or am I wrong? Its refreshing appearance, its striking colors, the existing varieties, make them essential in any public space, be it Heineken, Tropical, Nao, Agüita, Malpeis, 1009 - or was it 1906? -, my subconscious has already betrayed me.

Thinking in green is imagining Indian laurels, flamboyant trees, tipuanas, pines, jacarandas, etc. The ingredient of every get-together as they say now. Again I digress, the fundamental element to provide shade to our parks, improve health, combat climate change, beautify the streets or facilitate meeting areas.

Such are its beneficial aspects that Canadians argue that we would feel younger by simply planting ten more trees in a city block, and the effect would be, seven years less, almost nothing. Younger, happier, longer-lived and more sustainable, just planting - carefully - ten beers, what a mania!, ten trees: "think green, think green".

The World Health Organization itself has concluded that at least one tree is needed for every three inhabitants to breathe better air, so necessary in times of masks, and a minimum of 10 - 15 square meters of green space per inhabitant. It even seems to reduce stress and anxiety to have an urban and rural space populated with various tree species, for the delight of the eyes and the body.

In fact, past generations seemed to know it, and as an example, the street of trees in La Villa. One of the most beautiful in Teguise and Lanzarote, where the beauty of the historic center is combined with the presence and shadows of different specimens of "spice trees", in a unique combination between the white of the houses and the arboreal green. I am not surprised by the countless photos that attest to it.

Or the main road of Guatiza, escorted by a double line of trees that underline its lordship and the historical importance of this cochineal land that leads to the famous Cactus Garden of our Art, Culture and Tourism Centers.

Trees, to fulfill the easiest of things that every woman or man, according to the saying, must carry out in their life: "plant a tree, write a book - opinion articles will suffice, I say - and have a child".

Trees, Teguise, Guatiza, children, books... it is thinking in green and only good things come to mind. May the example spread! Many trees for our streets, squares, gardens and some pilsen, always in moderation, for this Friday.
