The president of the Lanzarote Business Confederation (CEL), Beatriz Salazar, recently held a working meeting with the Minister of Commerce of the Cabildo Insular de Lanzarote, Armando Santana, with the aim of analyzing the complex situation currently facing the Lanzarote commercial sector and addressing possible lines of action that allow reinforcing its competitiveness and sustainability.
During the meeting, Beatriz Salazar explained the main difficulties affecting the island's commercial fabric, placing special emphasis on the situation of vulnerability derived from the condition of double insularity, which increases logistical costs and hinders the competitive capacity of local businesses compared to other territories.
Beatriz Salazar also conveyed the existing concern about the growing impact of large online sales platforms, whose operational capacity and cost structure generate increasingly complex competition for traditional commerce.
“Added to this are other factors that are directly affecting the profitability of businesses, such as the increase in tax pressure, the rise in salary costs, the difficulties derived from labor absenteeism, as well as the lack of adequate infrastructure that favors commercial activity, bureaucratic hurdles, and the high price of housing," she assured.
The president especially highlighted the need to improve urban infrastructure linked to commerce, including the creation and expansion of parking areas that facilitate access for residents and visitors to the island's commercial areas.
Armando Santana was informed of the progress of the efforts to create the Insular Federation of Commerce, an initiative promoted by the Lanzarote Business Confederation with the aim of strengthening the sector's representation, coordinating joint actions, and more effectively defending the interests of local commerce before the different administrations.
During the meeting, both agreed on the need to continue advancing in collaboration formulas that allow reinforcing the competitiveness of local commerce and improving its ability to adapt to new market challenges.
In this regard, Beatriz Salazar and Armando Santana agreed to hold another meeting with the board of directors of the CEL, at the headquarters of the Lanzarote Business Confederation, in the coming weeks.
