I want to tell you that this week several people who practice hang gliding and paragliding in Lanzarote have started to move to try to stop the destruction involved in the installation by Red Eléctrica of those 50 m high towers from Macher to Playa Blanca. Although it is buried in the town of Macher and in the town of Femes, the monstrosity of seeing the south of Lanzarote full of towers is something that is going to be very hard for the locals.
The paragliding and hang gliding clubs denounce that these towers prevent them from continuing to practice their sport in this part of the island, and that many international competitions that are held there will no longer take place.
And I remembered how things get fixed when you want to.
Let's talk about Marine Wind Power in the Canary Islands. The planning of these marine energies is organized by the State, the Ministry of Ecological Transition. They prepared suitable areas and proposed to put marine wind power in Pozo Izquierdo in Gran Canaria and in front of the hotels of Maspalomas.
Also in Lanzarote, marine wind power is proposed in front of Las Caletas. It is pending to be eliminated as the Marine Protected Area of Lanzarote East-South and Fuerteventura has been declared.
The point is that the Cabildo of Gran Canaria with the support of the Government of the Canary Islands and its energy planning technicians convinced the Ministry that Pozo Izquierdo is an area of high sports value for windsurfing and that important international competitions are held there.
On the other hand, they managed to move the marine wind power from Maspalomas due to the tourist and economic importance of the area. That is why now the marine wind power in Gran Canaria is concentrated mainly on the coast of Arinaga.
Twenty years ago in Tenerife, the mayor of Vilafor mobilized the population of the island so that Red Eléctrica would bury the high-voltage power line and they managed to change the route. It was changed.
In the first case, there were some politicians and technicians determined to maintain areas of high value for the people and the economy of their island Gran Canaria, and they achieved it with several meetings with the Ministry.
In the second, a heroic politician fought until he managed to keep his town and the protected natural spaces intact, and he had the support of the citizens who attended the massive demonstrations he organized.
How will we protect Lanzarote so that all the high-voltage power lines from Macher to Playa Blanca are buried and that Lanzarote always remains Lanzarote?
This is how history is written, step by step. Let's go locals!!
