Lanzarote bids farewell to a committed teacher and parliamentarian for her land, whose career invites us to recognize the value of public service and the mark people leave on their community.
There are farewells that leave a silence difficult to explain. This is one of them. Her death reminds us of the fragility of life and the sadness of seeing the path of a young woman, who still had much ahead of her, interrupted.
Today I do not want to focus solely on the parliamentarian who represented Lanzarote in the regional Chamber, nor on the councilwoman who was part of the Arrecife Municipal Corporation. I want to look beyond those responsibilities and recognize the person who dedicated part of her life to working for her land.
Thank you, councilwoman.
Thank you for representing your people and for embracing public service as a way to contribute to collective well-being. Your career highlights the importance of getting involved in the life of a community and working to ensure its needs and concerns are addressed.
Your teaching vocation constitutes another dimension of that journey. Teaching means accompanying, awakening curiosity, and helping to shape the generations who will build the future. A task that, like public participation, finds its meaning in the possibility of contributing to a better society.
A graduate in Biology from the University of Granada, with a master's degree in Regional Development and specialized training in Political Leadership from the University of La Laguna, you balanced your work as a Secondary and Vocational Education teacher with your participation in public life.
Your institutional career began at the Arrecife City Council, where you served as councilwoman for Activities and Heritage Responsibility between November 2022 and June 2023. On July 31 of that last year, you joined the Parliament of the Canary Islands as a deputy for the insular constituency of Lanzarote, within the Canarian Nationalist Parliamentary Group.
But no list of titles and responsibilities can fully encompass a person's human dimension. Positions change and legislatures end; what remains is the value of shared experiences and the contribution of those who have participated in the life of their community.
Lanzarote, an island that shares the pain.
Beyond its volcanoes, its towns, and the sea that surrounds it, Lanzarote is a community of shared stories, affections, and experiences. That is why this loss transcends the political sphere and reaches family, friends, professional colleagues, and those who shared concerns and projects with you.
In moments like this, ideological differences must give way to solidarity and respect. It is not necessary to share all of a person's ideas to recognize their dedication, nor to agree with their political path to accompany those who suffer their absence.
The expressions of condolence from various spheres remind us that, in the face of pain, the human condition must prevail over disagreements. Accompanying also means respecting the silence of those who need time to face an absence for which there are not enough words.
The footprint that remains.
We live attentive to current events that quickly replace one piece of news with another. However, there are events that force us to stop and remember that behind every name there is an unrepeatable story.
What happened invites us to value the time shared, the affections, and the dedication of those who decide to work for others. It also reminds us that recognition should accompany people while they develop their projects and contribute to society, not only arrive when they are no longer here.
These lines do not aim to idealize a career or turn grief into a political argument. They aim to express respect for a woman who linked teaching with public service and to convey a sincere embrace to her loved ones and to all those who today face her absence.
Lanzarote will continue to look at the horizon, among its towns, its volcanoes, and that sea that seems to embrace it everywhere. Life will go on, but those who loved you will keep the memory of what was lived and of all that they shared with you.
Perhaps the true dimension of a person is not measured solely by the time they remain among us, but by the footprint they leave on those who had the opportunity to know them.
Rest in peace.
Thank you for your dedication and for being part of the history of this island. Thank you, conejera.
