Villages occupy a prominent place in our memory and in our way of imagining the world. They can be places to return to, communities to leave, or settings upon which we project a different life. The 16th Lanzarote Film Showcase begins its preliminary activities with five lectures and a panel discussion to be held from November 3 to 6 at UNED Lanzarote.

The cycle is part of an edition dedicated to the theme of Villages and will connect sociology, literature, art history, and cinema to explore how communities are built and how their ways of life are told. Organized by Tenique Cultural in collaboration with UNED Lanzarote and with the academic support of Professor Mario Ferrer Peñate, it will bring together researchers and creators who will allow us to relate the island reality to debates shared by other territories.

Professor Luis Camarero will open the lectures on Tuesday, November 3, at 7:30 p.m., with a lecture on rural society and its transformations. This UNED professor in Madrid will propose observing villages as places made of houses, affections, and images, which change along with their inhabitants and also reflect the aspirations of urban society.

On Wednesday, November 4, at 7:30 p.m., it will be the turn of María Ayete, a professor at the University of Alcalá, who will address the representations of rurality in contemporary Spanish novels. Her intervention will question the idea of a single rural world and will survey the narrative of the 20th and 21st centuries to analyze which experiences have become visible and which have remained on the margins.

The relationship between villages and their images will be the focus of the two lectures on Thursday, November 5. At 6:00 p.m., Rosemary Shirley, a professor at the University of Leicester, will present a unique tour of the representations of rural life in art and photography from the late 19th century to the present day. The session will be in English with simultaneous translation into Spanish.

Following this, at 7:30 p.m., Pascale Thibaudeau, a professor of visual arts at the University of Paris 8, will explore the persistence of the village as an idealized refuge or as a setting for fear and violence in Spanish cinema.

On Friday, November 6, at 6:30 p.m., the dialogue table "Pulgas en la Lengua" will bring the debate closer to an everyday and universal practice: gossip. Moderated by the poet and visual artist from Lanzarote, Juli Mesa, it will feature Lucía Dorta, Luz Pichel, and Sofía Crespo. The conversation will explore how gossipy stories circulate between the private and the public, transmit knowledge, and intervene in community relationships.

That same day, at 7:30 p.m., the Canarian historian Pedro Quintana will close the cycle with an analysis of how cultural exchanges and social and economic transformations have left their mark on the towns and landscapes of Lanzarote.

With this proposal, the Film Festival maintains one of its fundamental commitments: to connect local reality with global issues and to relate cinema with other forms of academic knowledge.

The Lanzarote Film Festival, organized by Tenique Cultural, is funded by the Cabildo de Lanzarote and La Graciosa, the Centers of Art, Culture, and Tourism, the Lanzarote External Promotion Society through its product brand Lanzarote Film Commission; with the sponsorship of the Government of the Canary Islands through the Canarian Institute for Cultural Development (Canary Islands Film) and Promotur (Canary Islands Latitude of Life), and the Institute of Cinematography and Audiovisual Arts of the Ministry of Culture of the Government of Spain.
