Teguise: first year of work of the government group to transform our municipality

June 24 2024 (11:22 WEST)

These days we are celebrating the first year of the new government group of Teguise. It has been a complicated year in which we have tried to lay the foundations for the work that will allow us to improve the quality of life of all our people in the coming years.

The transition has not been easy. We come from previous stages with governments that made another way of doing things possible. Now, on the contrary, we govern with a tripartite that forces us to dialogue, to understand each other and to achieve consensus on a permanent basis. It also requires us to have the participation of citizens, listen more and make decisions and measures that benefit the majority.

And in this sense I think we are moving in the right direction, with a lot of dialogue within the government group itself, but also with the Government of the Canary Islands, with the Cabildo and with other administrations of our Island.

As an example of the change, one of our first decisions was to end the problem we had with the old expropriations of Tahíche and Caleta de Famara, a circumstance that we had been dragging on for years that has had this City Council tied up for many years and from which we are now free, which will avoid financial blockages and we will be able to have liquidity and resources for investments, services and supplies that our people need.

We intend to improve the living conditions of all our neighbors, increasing social care and investing in new projects, as well as improving and reforming existing infrastructures, many of which need a significant update. This last point is one of our priority objectives, since there are many parks, schools, gardens, among other infrastructures, that need an improvement and a remodeling for the enjoyment of our people.

Teguise requires a tune-up in many of its public facilities, and that is what we are working on. Later, we plan to undertake projects and actions to completely transform our municipality and create a habitable, sustainable, accessible space with quality of life for our people.

In this sense, the Cabildo is working on the drafting of a Modernization Plan for Costa Teguise, where the hotel plant has been adapting to new times, rehabilitating and improving. We, in the City Council, are also concerned about what is in the second line, that is, the shopping centers, accessibility, neighborhoods, playgrounds, new public works and many more.

Costa Teguise is a good example of the transition from tourist beds to residential. There are 32,000 beds contemplated in the Tourist Plan, although we actually have half, about 17,000, so it is the area of the island that has most passed from tourist to residential use, in complexes such as Las Coronas, Teguisol and Playa Roca, among others. This change requires infrastructure and services to respond to the demand of its residents.

La Graciosa is another of our objectives and in this first year we have announced a transformation of the port of Caleta del Sebo, which will allow us to improve connectivity between the island and Órzola. In addition, there are other aspects that concern us to take care of its unique and sustainable character, such as sanitation, the uncontrolled dumping of debris or the implementation of a shock plan that includes cleaning work, conditioning of roads and painting of street furniture.

We have a lot of work ahead of us to put in order and renovate many educational, cultural, sports, social and outdoor areas, but it is necessary to do this work because we have to lay the foundations that allow us to face a real and effective transformation of our municipality in the coming years.

Our will and work is already underway. Now we want to count on the participation of our people, invite citizens to come to the town hall to talk with this mayor and the councilors, encourage them to participate in the neighborhood meetings and with groups that we organize in the towns. In short, that we can do a shared work that allows us to change and transform our municipality for the better.

We hope to have the support of our people to achieve it. Listening to and solving the problems of day to day is a priority objective for us, with the aim of turning Teguise into a benchmark municipality in the Canary Islands and giving it the value it deserves.
