Of pirates and evildoers

April 9 2021 (18:41 WEST)

Without mincing words, our firm condemnation of the theft carried out in the Castle of Santa Bárbara, the one that has observed the Noble, Illustrious, Loyal and Historic Villa de Teguise from the top of the Guanapay volcano for centuries, as Agustín de la Hoz said.

What happened is not strange, given the background and the presence, yesterday and today, of pirates and evildoers, of friends of others' property, who take advantage of these occasions to do their thing. Quite a temptation for those with an eye patch, with a mean face.

But having said that, what surrounds this unpleasant episode would not fit in the stories or legends of the Morato Arráez, Tabac Arráez and Soliman, no matter how much they resorted to the traditional...

Once upon a time there was a government that did not heed the warnings of “pirates in sight”, after previous acts of vandalism that affected the facilities attached to the Castle itself, as we warned from the shore of the opposition.

It is a pity for their inaction, because even though we know that man is the only being that stumbles twice on the same stone, they could have adopted some additional precaution and surveillance measure to protect the content that is kept behind the walls of the Teguise fortress.

Once upon a time there was a Castle abandoned to its fate for more than a year, when some rehabilitation works were paralyzed waiting for a mortar that would arrive in 24-48 hours (“it is already on its way on the ship” they told us), in immediate response to an appearance requested by the socialist group.

It is a pity that the announcement ended with the ship moving away and the mortar not reaching port.

Once upon a time there were rehabilitation works that were delayed in time, without a convincing explanation, despite the notes, questions and appearances formulated from the concern of our political group.

A question, even minor, if we compare it with the year that they have been paralyzed, with the attack against the historical heritage of the municipality and the island; with the deprivation of a museum space that is unknown when it will reopen its doors.

Now it remains to put an end to this bad story, capture the pirates who are on the loose - immediately, we hope - to prevent them from repeating their misdeeds, and recover the loot.

But also, and it is urgent, it is up to the government watchtower of Teguise to give a full account of the details and consequences surrounding the assault on the Castle.

They will have an opportunity in the plenary session this Monday, where a new appearance has been requested for weeks by the socialist group to address the resumption of the rehabilitation works of the Castle, the mayor would do well to take advantage and clarify the questions that everyone is asking in view of the news: ¿what was the loot?, ¿what were the losses caused?, ¿how could a whole fortress be assaulted?, ¿who was responsible for the surveillance work?, ¿what precautionary measures have been adopted since what happened?

For a couple of tibias and a caravel there would be no such urgency, for assaulting what belongs to everyone and attacking the legacy that houses the piracy museum, of course, is what is appropriate.
