Not like that, Oswaldo

February 13 2019 (22:19 WET)

Now I understand why Teguise is not a leader in Transparency and Information to citizens. And I thought it would be impossible to surpass the seven months that the President of the Cabildo hid from the opposition and his government partners a ruling that questioned the way in which the contract for the integral water cycle in Lanzarote was awarded.

But Oswaldo Betancort, Mayor of Teguise until today, has gone further. The student surpassed the teacher, some will say, to the misfortune of those of us who aspire to transparency and accountability to be a maxim in Local Administrations.

This time it was not the water but the garbage contract of my City Council and different rulings that he hid from the opposition, public opinion and all the residents of the Municipality.

For almost a year, almost a year, he hid a ruling that forces him to review the award for 12 years and more than twenty million euros of the cleaning service. And to top it off, he takes the matter to the Plenary, a matter that he knew since March 2018 for urgent matters. What is urgent is to change this Government, this absolute majority that considers that the City Council is only the Government and that the rest can wait to know the relevant news for the Municipality.

Not like that, Oswaldo, don't count on the PSOE like that.

We have come to change things and opacity, to prevent the opposition from being despised and to guarantee all citizens that they will be informed of the issues that affect them, whether positive or negative for their interests.

You know that if your way of understanding politics were transparent, you could not have hidden this ruling, nor others that I fear will appear. If you understood that today you are government and tomorrow opposition, you would not act this way.

Even more so in a matter that may entail significant financial compensation that all residents will pay and would aggravate the economic situation of the City Council, which I do not want.

What are you waiting for Oswaldo to report on the issue? To rule out possible compensation in this case? To clarify why it is possible in Teguise to hide such a relevant ruling for almost a year? To explain why the entire opposition, all of it, complains about the lack of documentation and information on this issue?

Those are not the ways, Oswaldo. Bad politics does not transmit confidence, only reasons to bet on the political change that Teguise needs. And you still wonder why I want to be Mayor?
