Ico's Day

May 24 2021 (10:57 WEST)

An important day this May 24, as unanimously and in the name of the people of Lanzarote, the Cabildo recognizes Don Federico Arrocha Hernández as a favorite son of our island.

Those of us who did not have the honor of knowing Ico Arrocha well would only be left with his voice. One of the most characteristic and personal, many say. Others speak of the voice of the Canary Islands.

However, those who shared time, stage, rehearsals or life experiences with Ico emphasize that if his voice was prodigious, his perseverance and companionship surpassed it.

Perseverance to improve every day, seeking to intone the perfect folía; to sing the most heartfelt malagueña or challenge with the most salamera polka. In a utopia that Ico accustomed us to reach.

It was his path, his vital decision: to always be better, to make our folklore and our groups better.

Los Campesinos, the Ajei group and its Guadarfía know this well, where he showed his perseverance, but also the companionship and humility that the new favorite son of the island always displayed.

For Ico, each lute, guitar, timple or "tenderete" companion was an essential piece for the dreamed performance, for the care of traditions and the delight of our popular culture.

Unfortunately, he left us too soon, leaving with other greats such as Nanino Díaz Cutilla or José Antonio Ramos, but his legacy and name will remain forever.

For all this, this house, the Cabildo, distinguishes Ico and what he represents: talent, perseverance, humanity, companionship, tradition, love for this island and its people.

Values of a special person, a unique singer and musician.

In addition, we do it in the prelude to the next May 30, the day of our community. On the occasion of this anniversary, his voice will sound again and excite Lanzarote and the Canary Islands.

Everyone having the opportunity to accompany his prodigious gift with the deserved words: "the one who sings is Don Federico Arrocha Hernández, Ico Arrocha, favorite son of Lanzarote and La Graciosa."

Thank you for everything, teacher.

Marcos Bergaz, PSOE councilor in the Cabildo.
